Outpatient pharmacists work in pharmacies associated with a particular medical institution and are most often located on the institution's premises.

Duties may include:

  • Fill prescriptions for patients of the parent facility or one of its outpatient clinics
  • Handle written prescriptions and phone prescriptions for patients hospitalized in the parent facility, have recently been discharged, or are in outpatient therapy
  • Monitor side effects and any interactions of prescribed drugs
  • Offer specialty drugs and preparations to patients
