Government Pharmacy Setting

Government pharmacists may work in both inpatient and outpatient settings. They work in VA and Indian Health settings. They play a vital role in the delivery of patient care and work closely with physicians and other healthcare providers to ensure that patients receive the best care.

Duties may include:

  • Create drug treatment with physicians
  • Educate patients on effects, dosage and administration of medications
  • Go on rounds and take an active role in the treatment process
  • Monitor side effects and any interactions of prescribed drugs
  • Conduct therapeutic and pharmacokinetic counseling
  • Work in a virtually paperless pharmacy using computerized records system, bar code medication administration system and automated dispensing system
  • Access patient's entire healthcare record to assess appropriate drug therapy
