Correctional pharmacists provide pharmacy services, sometimes on a consultative basis, to correctional facilities. They must be on call for emergency situations. Correctional pharmacists are often required to manage all aspects of the pharmacy.

Duties may include:

  • Prescribe and dispense medicines
  • Instruct patients on the use of medicines and medical appliances
  • Control of all drug products
  • Review and ensure confidentiality in patient records
  • Assist in establishing a budget for the pharmacy
  • Partake in pharmacy and therapy committee meetings
  • Educate correctional and medical staff on proper use of medications
  • Maintain emergency medication kits
