Government pharmacy directors may work in both inpatient and outpatient settings. They work in VA and Indian Health settings. They play a vital role in the delivery of patient care and work closely with physicians and other healthcare providers to ensure that patients receive the best care.

Duties may include:

  • Create drug treatment with physicians
  • Educate patients on effects, dosage and administration of medications
  • Plan, supervise, coordinate and execute all activities related to the pharmacy's operation
  • Supervise department personnel, including hiring, orientation, determining workload, scheduling, evaluating performance, disciplinary actions
  • Assist administration with annual budget
  • Establish standards and procedures for provision of services
  • Coordinate with other departments to provide maximum level of service
  • Maintain pharmacy licenses, contracts and compliance with all state and federal laws
