Correctional Pharmacy Setting

Correctional pharmacy directors provide pharmacy services, sometimes on a consultative basis, to correctional facilities. They must be on call for emergency situations.

Duties may include:

  • Responsible for meeting the standards of the National Commission on Correctional Health Care and the American Correctional Association
  • Maintain knowledge of inmate-patients' rights, current literature and court rulings affecting the practice of correctional healthcare
  • Maintain a policies and procedures manual
  • Ensure that all medications meet legal requirements
  • Instruct patients on the use of medicines and medical appliances
  • Responsible for security of all drug products
  • Review and ensure confidentiality in patient records
  • Assist in establishing a budget for the pharmacy
  • Partake in pharmacy and therapy committee meetings
  • Educate correctional and medical staff on proper use of medications
